Stryker
Basics 2K Fun Stryker Build |
Using a thin stiff piece of cardboard I wedged it into gap wiggling it in. The idea is the break thru the 2 sided tape that holds the cells together. You cant rush this cuz you dont want the foil to tear. Slow and ez.
Once you get about half way thru you can wedge something between to hold the gap open.
I wedged a thin piece of balsa in gap slowly pushed it up a little bit at a time till I reach the top. You need to go slow to avoid ripping foil cuz the 2 sided tape is very sticky
Now the cells are separated
Each set of wire will be covered with a piece of tape so to get at the wires where the cells were separated the balsa block is removed to get at the end of tape to expose the battery tab.
Below the tape you will see where the cells are joined together
The bent over foil tab of these cells are folded and spot welded together.
Lifting up the tab up will give better access so it can be separated
Using an exacto knife try and get between the foil where its spot welded. Push the blade in and twist a little bit to break the spot welds. The foil will rip fairly ez so try and keep it intact as best you can. It will rip some in order to break the welds and theres no way around that.
Flip cells over and do other side
Once separated you can see how it ripped along the spot weld.
Now the only thing holding these
cells together is the wires to balance adaptor plug. The balance adaptor
plug you need to use is determined by your chargers adaptor plug. I use a
cellpro4 charger that can only handle 4s and its set up with a thunder power
adaptor plug. Being the NEU battery has a 6 wire plug and wont fit my
charger I switched it to a thunder power 3&4 cell adaptor. You can get
balance connectors from most hobby stores and if you look around you can even
find plugs with a 3 and 4 cell connector on the same connector. The wires are
held in by tiny clips that you can use a pin or exacto knife to slightly pry
the clip back to release the wires, just dont break them off by prying to
far. Depending on the plug you use the wires need to be in order, cells 1234
or 4321, the thin black (neg) wire number 1 will always be at one end of
connector. You
will need match up to your charger wires to find the order. For thunder
power the wires are 1234 and some packs like polyquest are backwards 4321.
Soldering Tips: Always tin the wires before you solder and DONT heat the foil tabs too much or it can ruin the cells. Use the solder and flux shown in pic below to solder the foil tabs, regular electrical solder wont stick to the foil. Shrink wrap usually comes by the foot and you can get different colors, around a $1 per foot and a hair drier is used on high heat setting to shrink it over packs. Packs shown below have clear shrink wrap.
You can get this solder and flux from cheapbatterypacks.com
